Older people from around Japan flock to Sugamo, which is popular among senior citizens. Its level of appeal is now spreading among younger people because of its well-preserved old townscape. The Nakasendo (a major travel route in the Edo period) passes through this area. In next door Komagome, there is the Nikko Onari Kaido (an important route established during the Edo period), which helped form the town's history and traditions.
Stores line the shopping street from Sugamo Station to Shinsho Temple via Kogan Temple, known as "Togenuki (Thorn-Plucking) Jizo," and the fairs held on the fourth of each month are very popular occasions among senior citizens. The neighborhood has many old and famous temples, making it perfect for a temple tour.
The Komagome area was formerly well known for the cultivation of Somei Yoshino cherry trees and for horticulture. The Somei Yoshino cherry tree is a variety of cherry tree that is famous worldwide. Rikugien Garden has been designated as a place of particular scenic beauty.
